Is Graduate School for Me as a First-generation College Student? (Frost 204)

A workshop by Orley Estrada (Undergrad, The College of William & Mary)

About this Workshop

Navigating the graduate school application can be daunting as the first person in your family to pursue a postgraduate degree. There are vast structural barriers to first-generation college students applying to graduate schools: Will they afford application fees? Do they know free resources for standardized testing? Can they craft an effective statement of purpose? If any of these questions scare you, do not worry because the Is Graduate School for Me as an FG (first-generation college ) Student? workshop is here to answer all of your questions. You will gain three valuable lessons from our workshop.

Many first-generation college (FG) students are often left alone to determine the next steps after their undergraduate experience. However, some FG students are fortunate enough to participate in federally funded TRIO programs that provide one-to-one mentorship on the next steps after their undergraduate experience. Regardless of their mentorship experience for their lives post-undergrad, this 45-minute presentation seeks to give FG students an introspective session where they can start formulating whether graduate school is the next appropriate step, considering the cost of attendance, the time commitment, etc.
